What about new talents in the world? Which 16 to 21 old players do you know, which have the ability to enter the World TOP10 or TOP20?
Is there a new Waldner? Who can break the chinese wall? Are there unknown new chinese or swedish players?
In Germany, there is Timo Boll. I think he will enter the TOP20, but he has not the chance to "kill" 3 chinese players in a row, like Waldner. Boll can beat Wang Liquin or Kong Linghui or Liu Guoliang or Ma Lin or Liu Guozheng, but he cannot beat all them in one Tournament. The one and only, who had the ability was the "big old man of TT" Jan-Ove Waldner.
What is your opinion?

I think Valimir Samsonov also has the ability as Waldner to beat all the Chinese players in one tournament.
Boll I think the same as you Uwe. He will probably not be able to beat all the Chinese in a row.
But what do you think of Adrian Crisan? In my opinion he is not much weaker then Timo at the moment. So also only Top 20!??!
Maybe one of them or even both will make a step forward and get much better at once. Maybe then they can beat the chinese wall. But only maybe
Bye Chris
Question: how old was Timo Boll when the DTTB decided that he was a potential future champion who deserved to be encouraged and helped in his development?
What exactly have they done for him? z.B. have they sponsored him to train overseas?
Or are such things usually left to corporate sponsors like Joola or Stiga?
In the German Bundesliga are some very good young player.
For example Constantin Cioti from Romania is a young talent.
He plays in the best TT-league in the world and is only 17 or 18 years old. Maybe he will be one of the best players in a few years.
Why are you looking for a new JOW? He is an extraordinary player, probably the best for decades. There are many other good players, but no one can compete. He is -perhaps was - simply a TT-genius.
Greetings,
Volkmar
@ All:
this old thread shows nice guesses only two years ago regarding Timo Boll.... :D:D:D:D
Time meanwhile went on !
Any other young European players, who might be able to reach the top ten in the near future ??
Ciao
Norbert
Hi all,
I have found two new talents (in the www-sites):
1) Matiss Burgis from Lettland (14 years old)
2) János Jákab from Hungary (17 years old)
Any other young talents you know ?
Ciao
Norbert
Germany has many good young players such as Patrick Baum, Ruwen Filus, Dimitrji Ovtcharov. But i think they can't become "new waldners". Even the top talnets from China Wang Hao, Chen Qi can't become so successful like Jan-Ove Waldner it was.
there is one name missing: MA LONG!!! :boing:
and there is a other good koreaner player, too, but i forgot his name, maybe somebody other knows?

Ma Long and no other chinese player will become a new Waldner, because Waldner ist round about 40 years old and chinese players stop their carreer much earlier.
And there will be everytime new chinese players which are on top and nobody of them will be their for generations.

I think you mean Lee Jung Woo.
The Japanese un Mizutani is also very good. But none of them will become equal to Waldner.
This is a very charmful question ! Great to discuss more as in Past tense here......
Waldner is the greatest player in the last 30 years. Have you any chance to get more as Waldner. I do not think so !
All times you have greater players with a good feeling, very good conditions and with the eyes of a tiger to win the big points ! In the last five years, this thread started 2001, some players are coming.
For the Future i see many possibilitys for Ovtcharov and Baum !!
What is your opinion ?

Waldner is the greatest player in the last 30 years. Have you any chance to get more as Waldner. I do not think so !In my opinion, we in Europe we shall not miss to look at the great chinese players. I am not sure, if the best chinese players had not been better in their time they played (for example Liu Guoliang or now Wang Liqin). Waldner played much longer, than the best chinese players. Shall we compare the duration of a 10 year career with a 30 year career?
For sure, Waldner is unique and will stay unmatched forever! He wasn´t always the best, but he put his stamp on tabletennis like noone did before. No young talented player will ever be able to follow his steps.
For the Future i see many possibilitys for Ovtcharov and Baum !!Baum will become a good german player like Hielscher and Fejer-Konnerth but he will not be able to reach world´s TOP-30 rankings. Ovtcharov is able to become a world class player and reach world rankings between 8 and 20.

Jiang Jialiang in his heydays (1984-1987) surely matched Waldner. Liu Guoliang and Wang Liqin came close to him.
Carter 78, please compare :
Appelgren and Lindh ! Ovtcharov and Baum !
Appelgren = Ovtcharov
Lindh = Baum
I say this is possibel, the style of them and also the quantitys and qualitys of the championships. I know this opinion is a risk to say today !
Ovtcharov will be better, step by step, not only the position in world-ranking, i mean the quality of his playing.
Baum will stay a long time the same level, he needs time - i believe 2 - 4 years playing international championsships - then he shoot up ...........

ILCHEV,
Some quite ambitious statements. But, admittedly, especially Ovtcharov was playing - overall - consistently well over the course of the past few months. So, I can see where you're coming from. Nevertheless, I wouldn't declare victory prematurely - when a young Timo Boll had entered the scene, people spoke of a new "Waldner". Well, we all know that he never quite got there (and I say that with all the respect to Timo Boll, who is a great player, doubtlessly).
Nevertheless, it's amazing that there's a bunch of young German players with a lot of potential. However, as of now, I cannot see any who can reach up to Waldner's level.
Yes Toni, correct. Ovtcharov and Baum i don´t see the level and the quality as Jan-Ove Waldner. My Opinion is, i see two players with motivation and a strong leader behind them to push up in the scene !!
And by the way, Baum has a very dangerous dynamite in his Hand.............

I happened to see some bits and pieces of the DTTL today (only the doubles). I was quite impressed with Suess' consistency and gutsy shots.
Nobody can compete with Waldner, he is simply The Pele of table tennis. There is no doubt why he is called the "Mozart of table tennis". He is the greatest ever.
Best regards from Good Old Germany,
Jancsi
samsonov is pretty high up there with waldner,
he's a multiple european champion,
he now just needs to win a world or olympic championship,

I also believe that Samsonov has the possibility to play on the same(or at least almost the same) level Waldner played in his best times. Samsonov has an incredibly good feeling for the ball. He doesnt only show (like the leading chinese )how agressive he can play , but he masters also a magnificent allround-style. Watch his blocks as an example! I personally dont know anybody else who can block as well as samsonov...
A disadvantage of his style of play is unfortunately his quite stiff wrist but on the other side this allows him to change from backhand to forehand an vice versa very quickly. And besides, nobody is perfect^^.

First of all, thank for your comment Big_Maama (Big Bill Broonzy fan???)
Now, I try to make any sense of Samsonov's supposedly allegedly "stiff wrist" as you called it. Can you elaborate on that a lil' more?
Thanks!

Well, he doesn´t change his grip-position at all. Some players like Timo Boll change their grip - so they have a forehand and a backhand grip which allows them to use their wrist much more and to have the best grip for each situation(e.g. backhand-grip for smash)...
Samsonov instead uses the "neutral-grip" ; here is the hand much closer to the bat. If you watch Samsonov´s serves you´ll notice he uses even there his "neutral grip". Hope you understood what I mean ^^

Okay, I understand. I guess I never paid any attention to that. Thanks!
