samsonov is pretty high up there with waldner,

he's a multiple european champion,

he now just needs to win a world or olympic championship,

"just", yes.

I also believe that Samsonov has the possibility to play on the same(or at least almost the same) level Waldner played in his best times. Samsonov has an incredibly good feeling for the ball. He doesnt only show (like the leading chinese )how agressive he can play , but he masters also a magnificent allround-style. Watch his blocks as an example! I personally dont know anybody else who can block as well as samsonov...
A disadvantage of his style of play is unfortunately his quite stiff wrist but on the other side this allows him to change from backhand to forehand an vice versa very quickly. And besides, nobody is perfect^^.

First of all, thank for your comment Big_Maama (Big Bill Broonzy fan???)

Now, I try to make any sense of Samsonov's supposedly allegedly "stiff wrist" as you called it. Can you elaborate on that a lil' more?

Thanks!

Well, he doesn´t change his grip-position at all. Some players like Timo Boll change their grip - so they have a forehand and a backhand grip which allows them to use their wrist much more and to have the best grip for each situation(e.g. backhand-grip for smash)...
Samsonov instead uses the "neutral-grip" ; here is the hand much closer to the bat. If you watch Samsonov´s serves you´ll notice he uses even there his "neutral grip". Hope you understood what I mean ^^

Okay, I understand. I guess I never paid any attention to that. Thanks!

Thanks for that recommendation; it is really helpful for me to say!

Of course there won't be any Waldner followers. It's simple: There isn't anyone either who could claim about himself that he would be able to compose better classical songs of the 1750-1800 period than Mozart :)

What about new talents in the world? Which 16 to 21 old players do you know, which have the ability to enter the World TOP10 or TOP20?
Is there a new Waldner? Who can break the chinese wall? Are there unknown new chinese or swedish players?
In Germany, there is Timo Boll. I think he will enter the TOP20, but he has not the chance to "kill" 3 chinese players in a row, like Waldner. Boll can beat Wang Liquin or Kong Linghui or Liu Guoliang or Ma Lin or Liu Guozheng, but he cannot beat all them in one Tournament. The one and only, who had the ability was the "big old man of TT" Jan-Ove Waldner.
What is your opinion?

How is the situation today?

:!: only in english!

(translat.: A player like Waldner is unique. There can't be a new player like JOW!)

I think it's an international forum, so we should write in English. ;)

But I agree with "Lorencraft". The comparison with Waldner isn't appropiate. His style of playing and mentality is totaly unique. I admire(d) this kind of play, but it's not imitable! So there will never be a new Waldner!

Timo Boll: It's hard for him! There are so many chinese top players, you nearly can't beat them all... So the medal was a big success! And there is always suppliesfrom china! The domination became bigger and bigger. The second best European player for example, Samsonov, has absolutely no chance against the chinese players in the top10 (Wang Hao, Ma Long, Zhang Jike, Ma Lin, Wang Liqin and Xu Xin).
Sad, but true.

Greets ;)

But Timo Boll needs a title by one of the two biggest tournaments, World Championship or Olympic Games. Only these titles make you immortal. This is why almost everyone still knows Fetzner and Rosskopf.
