Brinkmanship; nobody is better at the art than Germany’s 18 year old Benedikt Duda.

In the third round of the Boys’ Singles event at the Volkswagen World Junior Championships in the Indian city of Hyderabad, on Saturday 15th December 2012, he saved four match points to cause the shock result of the day and arguably the biggest upset of the whole tournament.

Occupying the no.15 seeded position the draw; he beat Japan’s Asuka Machi, the no.3 seed, in a thrilling duel to book his place in the quarter-finals.

Recovered
Benedikt Duda recovered from a three games to two deficit and a 5-1 deficit in the vital seventh game to secure victory by the very narrowest of margins (11-9, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-6, 17-15).

He brought proceedings to a conclusion on the morning of the seventh day of play in a supercharged electric atmosphere.

Twelve Match Points Saved
Four match points were saved before victory was secured.

In fact in two rounds of the Boys’ Singles event he saved a total of no less than 12 match points.

Eight Match Points in Round Two
There were no great problems in his opening round duel when he beat Hong Kong’s Li Hon Ming in five games (11-6, 9-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-7) but then in his second round contest, he faced the precipice of defeat not once but on no less than eight occasions.

Against Poland’s Konrad Kulpa he saved no less than eight match points before emerging victorious (11-7, 6-11, 8-11, 5-11, 12-10, 16-14, 15-13).

Chinese Teenagers Upset Seeding
A shock win and there were two further contests, where the lower seeded player upset matters but the results could not compare with the heroics of Benedikt Duda.

Also wenn das mal nicht, wie ein Tritt ins offene Gesicht für den DTTB ist, dann weiß ich auch nicht weiter. Petrissas Erfolg hier und Sabines Versagen, bei den Grand Finals, auf der anderen Seite sollten hier klar aufzeigen auf welches Pferd, pardon Frau, hier zu setzen ist. Somit nochmal ein klarer Beleg dafür, dass Petrissas Nichtberücksichtigung im Einzel bei der EM eine klare Fehlentscheidung war. Aber nochmal Hut ab vor ihrer Leistung ! :klatsch::klatsch:

Wahrlich was für ein Affront. Da schickt ein Verband eine Athletin ins Rennen und die erdreistet sich dann auch noch erfolgreich zu sein. Das muss doch personelle Konsequenzen haben :)

Ich gehe mal davon aus, dass der DTTB sich freut, dass Petrissa Solja erfolgreich ist. Außerdem wäre durchaus Platz für sie und Sabine Winter im Nationalkader.

Nein,
ich meinte es eher in dem Sinne, dass sie Winter Solja bei der EM vorgezogen haben, obwohl die WRL-Platzierung für Solja sprach.

Duda 0:4, der Chinese war doch eine Nummer zu groß für ihn.
