Werner Schlager back again versus Chinese top players ?

Hi All,

when discussing in the German Forum -partially also Werner Schlager has personally answered to our queries- I have got the impression that despite of recent problems he might be in a mental position to return back to the top ten players of the world and (who knows) show the European flag versus the Chinese top players.

What do you think about Werner Schlager's possibilities for such a come-back ? I am interested, Kindly advise.

Ciao
Norbert

Werner Schlager is mentally very strong that's right. I think he has the strongest concentration ever. But at the moment he has too many injuries, like those during the Worldcup in Belgium. All in all he as the potential to come back in the Top 10.

I'm sorry, but don't you all think Schlager is now a bit too old?

He is now 35, isn't he?

There are so many young, motivated and talented players, not only from China (me, too ;) ) , that I think he will never become strong enough to beat 3 or 4 class-players in a row, as he needed and made it in Paris 2003.

He is definitly still a great player and one of the best Europe ever had, he is sure to be able to beat Wang,Ma or whoever, but nevermore in a row I think.

Another point is that the Chinese players' tactics against Schlager are much more clever.3 years ago only insiders thought Schlager would be able to beat Kong,Wang an Joo. After his World Championship title in 2003 they really recognized (problably and actually too late) that he is a real danger for them. So they startet to train with regard to Werner. We can see that if we have a look on the service and retourn play. The Chinese players have never had such great problems with Schlagers service before and after 2003...

werner´s birthday: 28.9.1972 ;)
Never ever anyone imagined werner winning the title in paris 2003. BUT china always considered him a reasonable threat. His unique services and technique are absolutely world class, but his weak physical constitution and his imho over-rationalization are often limiting his success. in paris werner moved excellent and played without a glimpse of doubt in very tight situations supported by an emphatic crowd.
after winning this title he seemed to settle down. if there is still a great goal to achieve, it´s the olympic title. but another 2 years... i don´t believe it.

i think you can't give a defintion for the word "old". Schlager himself said that "you're never too old" and I think with this statement he is right.
for european conditions he isn't "too old". when he has a good day he can beat every world class player, from europe and from asia. that's my opinion towards Werner Schlager.

Schlager is born in 1973 - but he nevertheless is too old to compete with the Top-Players in the next great major tounaments (WM 2007 or Olympia 2008). His best times are surely through and his third place in 1999 (Eindhofen) and the WM-title 2003 in Paris will remain as remarkable highlights in his career.
