I think you heard a lot of weird oppinions and got "thrown in the dirt". And now here is my look at the rule changes, and how it works:
First, there was a Ball with 38mm. This Ball had speed and spin. It was good for all defenders, cause only with spin they're able to play their game on a high level.
Then there was the decission, to take the 40mm Ball. You tought the game will be slower and more spinny. But the 40mm Ball is as fast as the 38mm Ball. It's getting harder for the Defenders.
But, the 40mm Ball had less spin, so the weapon (A Magnum) from the defenders (the Spin-Change) was tradet for a little Water-Gun
Then the long pimples had to have a other aspect rotatio. Less danger for the Attacker, more work for the defenders.
Now the ban of the frictionless long pimples. I still don't understand why. If you play a Topspin, you got Backspin from the Pimples. If you play Backspin, you got topspin from theire pimples. It is not as difficult as du discribe it. And, the most attacker know this, and played good after some games against LP's. Only some ware victims against LP's (Long Pips).
If you ever played a long frictionless pimple, you should know, that it is not easy to play with this pimples. If it is hard to controll for your opponent, it is hard to controll the pips as well. It doesn't work to get your racket in the ball, and the ball will fly like magic on the other side
and will have unknown spin.
You talked about the issue, to get more defenders to fit the game to the TV-watchers. But, what is more exiting as a match between a good Attacker and a good defender? Nothing, you're right.
But all your new rules make the life harder for defenders. The rubbers for the Attacker get faster, and faster an faster. The Defenders got no new rubber-type for 5 or 6 years. and if there were new things, you "killed" it, because is was tooooooooo dangerous for the attackers.
