@jamjam: Andre is right, it would be a big step forward if he holds his racket over the table. It has nothing to do if you want to play loop or counter or block... but it makes it possible to hit the ball earlier and to have more time for playing a technical good ball.
Check out Timo Bolls style or the best chinese players, they are playing most of time over the level of the table.
Another advantage that it's easier to change between forehand and backhand and you get more stability in your body (Zhang Jike is to my mind the player with the best stability and his racket is mostly quite high).
So. Think about it some more days. Especially in long terms it would be better if you start training this already now.
