“I played him in 2004 at the Olympic Qualification Tournament; that was the year after he had reached the final of the World Championships”, reminisced Sharath Kamal Achanta. “I had absolutely no chance!”
More recently they met in the Men’s Team event at the Asian Games last November; Joo Saehyuk won in three straight games.
So what was the reason for the quite remarkable change in fortunes?
“Panagiotis Gionis”, came the answer. “We both play in the same club in Düsseldorf and he has been telling me what defenders do not like.”
In Jaipur, Sharath Kamal Achanta put the wisdom of the Greek defender to the test.
“Sometimes I served long, when you do that the defender is already moving back expecting a strong attack; so today instead on many occasions I just returned the ball short”, explained Sharath Kamal Achanta. “Joo Saehyuk is very clever, he breaks the rhythm of your play; sometimes he return short, sometimes long and from the backhand he is very safe.
