Halmstad is the home city of Jorgen Persson, former team and singles winner from Sweden.
Now 51 years old and retired from the national team, Persson will be acting as a local ambassador for the World Championships.

Sweden has held the World Championships on six occasions previously. Stockholm in 1928, 1949, 1957, 1967, and Gothenburg in 1985 and 1993. This is the first time they will host it in Halmstad.

Last time Sweden hosted the World Championships in 1993 their men’s team won on home soil, beating China three matches to one in the final. The Swedish trio in the final were JanOve Waldner, Jorgen Persson, and Peter Karlsson.

Vladimir Samsonov from Belarus is playing his 22nd World Championships, while Belgium’s Jean-Michel Saive extends his record to 25 World Championships.
