“I am in good shape for the tournament and everything seems normal for me because World Cup is a special event and I have a lot of expectations for it. Being my first game, I was a bit nervous because I did not play from the group. It was a bit tense but I have prepared very well for the championship.

I will not be focusing on possible match against Ma Long, as my next opponent is Timo Boll and I need to face that for now.”


ARUNA Quadri (NGR) after losing 0-4 to MIZUTANI Jun (JPN) in the round of 16

“I was trying to avoid Ma Long in the last 16, I never knew Mizutani was going to be difficult. I think I tried my best from the start, it was just that Mizutani was all over me. I could return his service well and this really affected me. I think as African representatives, Omar Assar and I really performed very well by qualifying from the group which was also very hard. Our performance has shown that Africa has come up as we gave out best against the best. Personally, I am satisfied with my performance. “Yesterday I watched several videos of Aruna Quadri and I noticed he does not like playing against a left-hand player. He also has problem with receiving service. I prepared for this against him today and I used this against him. I knew that if I allowed him to play his forehand, it will be difficult for me to play against him. I just ensure I used my topspin very well to his backhand. I must also admit that he is a very strong player with a lot of power but less technique on short balls.”

Simon Gauzy (FRA) after beating Jun Mizutani (JPN) 4-3 in quarterfinal

“It was a very crazy match and crazier than the match between Timo Boll and Lin Gaoyuan. I am just delighted to overcome Mizutani, who is also a fantastic player. I am very happy and to get to this stage is a big task and hard work. I am just really happy with my performance this year. I am also happy to have my family here supporting me. Particularly with the kind supporting me and this really was very great for me. I worked hard to stay calm today throughout the match but inside me I was burning. It was a great match and great win against a great player.”


Timo BOLL (GER) after beating LIN Gaoyuan (CHN) 4-3 in quarterfinal

“It was a crazy match and I had to fight because this is my living room. I just felt I had to fight in this wonderful arena with the huge support from the fans and I was lucky as well. I think I had to use the next 20 minutes to enjoy this victory. Against Ma Long in the semifinal, I have nothing to lose I just had to fight just like I did at the last World Championship in Dusseldorf. There is no doubt that he is best player in the world and it is indeed an honour to play against him.”

“I was leading in the fourth set and I made some errors which made me to lose the match. But I remained focus and take one point after another. I am not thinking of the title as I just want to play every single match after another.”

Halbfinale

Dimitrij Ovtcharov (GER) after beating Simon Gauzy (FRA) 4-3 in semifinal

“I was exhausted and I just kept on fighting and remain focus. It is a tough competition because I only slept for three hours and I am just trying to be focused. It will surely be an exciting final against Timo Boll but surely a German will win the World Cup.”


Timo Boll (GER) after beating Ma Long (CHN) 4-3 in semifinal

“I don’t know what to say because it was a crazy match. Being down by 1-3 against such a great player like Ma Long. Even when I was down, I was a bit more relaxed trying to enjoy the game. I must also thank the fans for their support. I think I had nice feeling and having such feeling against such a great player was helpful.”


Schade, ich hätte sehr gerne gehört, was Ma Long zu seiner Niederlage gegen Timo Boll sagt.

Genauso hätte mich interessiert, was Lin Gaoyuan zu seinem Viertelfinal Aus gegen Timo Boll gesagt hat, vor allem da er wieder so viele Matchbälle verspielt hat, wie schon bei der WM gegen Xu Xin. Sollte er schnell in den Griff bekommen und nicht nochmal vorkommen, sonst setzt sich das bei ihm mental fest und er hat seinen Ruf weg als Nervenbündel, obwohl er noch jung ist.

Finale und Spiel um Platz 3

“I could never have imagined few years ago that I could be winning the World Cup. I think the support from my family was very helpful because without them I could not have been here today as champion of the World Cup. I am indeed privilege to be listed among the World Cup winners particularly I must acknowledge the quality of Timo Boll who defeated two great Chinese players on his way to the final. I could see he was a bit tired as he could not move very well having played some fantastic matches. I think he deserves the victory as much as I do. I think I will have to go home and celebrate with my family.”


Ma Long (CHN) after beating Simon Gauzy (FRA) 4-3 in the bronze medal match

“I am indeed disappointed with my lost in the semifinal because I came here to do my best and give the fans something to cheer. But after the match, I really focused on this match and it is worthwhile winning the bronze medal match. I think for you to win any match, you have to be 100 percent ready. I did not lose my passion as I just focused on this match.”

Mich würde aber im Nachhinein interessieren, warum Dima vor dem Finaltag nur 3 Stunden Schlaf hatte (siehe Interview nach dem Spiel gegen Gauzy)?

Weil das Spiel gegen Shibaev eh schon relativ spät war und er dann noch zur Dopingkontrolle musste, was wohl immer recht lästig ist und sich hinzieht.
Bis er im Hotel war war es schon spät in der Nacht und du schläfst nicht unbedingt sofort ein. Und morgens musste er bereits wieder zeitig raus, weil vormittags das Halbfinale anstand.

hi Kim,

das Spiel gegen Shibaev war gegen 23:45 fertig. Danach Doping Kontrolle und ich war gegen 1:00 im Hotel.

Eine Kleinigkeit gegessen, Eisbad, kleine Massage und mir gauzy noch kurz auf Video angeschaut.

Im Bett war ich dann kurz nach 3:00 ... um 7:00 hat schon wieder der Wecker geklingelt weil ich immer min. 4 Stunden vor den Spielen aufstehe.
