17/10/2007 – What an unbelievable match Tatar supporters enjoyed during the first TMS European Super Cup semi-final between Timo BOLL and Alexei SMIRNOVtoday in Kazan! Strongly encouraged by his country-people, the Russian offered one of his best performances since 2003, when he was celebrated as a real top-player after the unpredictable Top-12 win in Rennes, and he was really very close to achieve a surprising victory against the favourite number 1.
BOLL had a complicate start-up losing the first two sets; SMIRNOV was playing very aggressive, and BOLL had to make enormous efforts to rebuilt his match. SMIRNOV looked to have the match in his hand after winning 12:10 the fourth set, but how undervalue BOLL’s resources could be dangerous is well know to everyone. The real turning point was the sixth set, won by Timo 11:6 and giving him the 3-3 tie.
SMIRNOV was dishearten but didn’t renounce to reply BOLL impressive shots. When Alexei felt the match was quite missing, he called the spectators help, probably too late. BOLL closed the match with a 11:5 score in the last set getting the TMS European Super Cup final that also SMIRNOV should have deserved, taking into consideration his high-level performance: just a real champion like BOLL could overcome a so skilled opponent

RESULTS – Semifinals: Timo Boll (Ger)-Alexei Smirnov (Rus) 4-3 (9-11, 8-11, 11-9, 10-12, 11-8, 11-6, 11-5).

17/10/2007 – The richest European tournament never held (120.000 USD prize money) needed a super-champions to celebrate, such as Timo BOLL was indeed. Tonight’s final in Kazan nominated the top-seeded European player the worthy TMS Super Cup winner: Timo BOLL showed a sharp supremacy to reach the goal he had focused from the very beginning of this challenging mission in the Tatarstan capital. The final score (4-0) doesn’t allow any regrets to the others.
Kazan, a true city of sport, finally discovered what exciting spectacle table tennis can offer. BOLL and SAMSONOV showed themselves the skilled players everybody knows, confirming their fair-play also in the match critical moment.
For sure, SAMSONOV suffered a two-nil reverse at the very beginning of the match. He tried to rise in the third set during which both contenders gifted beautiful shots. BOLL got the third point with a narrow margin (11-9) leaving the Belarussian very few hopes. Even though Vladi didn’t waive to fight till the latest point, the TMS European Super Cup was already on the way to Germany.
Michael MAZE beat Alexei SMIRNOV in close six sets to secure the bronze medal place, disappointing the Russian to finish fourth out of the final podium.

Na, dann hat sich ja der ganze Stres mit Auskurieren der Krankheit, World Cup und direkter, auch noch durch Schneechaos verlängerter Weiterreise nach Russland wenigstens gelohnt.
WIEDR ein Titel, ein NEUER Titel in der Sammlung und ein Titel, den er bisher als EINZIGER holte!

In dem Fall war der "Titel" scheißegal. Dafür hat er mit 50 000 Euro ein sehr hohes Preisgeld gewonnen. So leicht und schnell kann er das bestimmt nicht mehr in nächster Zukunft.
Find ich echt klasse, wenn Spieler auch mal finanziell stark belohnt werden!

Ist aber schon ziemlich hoch das Preisgeld. Dafür, dass das Turnier mal eben so unter der Woche stattfand und auch auf tischtennis.de z.B. nur mit kleinen Schlagzeilen am Rande berichtet wurde...
